Biddle House

265 Parawa Rd, Torrens Vale

This cottage on section 18 was built about 1863, probably by stonemason Richard Stone, for James and Ann Biddle, who had arrived in South Australia on the Forfarshire in 1848. They came to Torrens Vale about 1855 where they acquired section 18 under the Waste Lands Act. They called their property 'Spring Farm'. They lived at first in a tent and then in a wattle and daub cottage, before this stone cottage was built.

Ann died in 1872 'of chronic rheumatism' and was buried in the Bible Christian cemetery. Less than a year James remarried, to widow Fanny Harris, and they subsequently retired to Morphett Vale, where James died in 1886. His son James junior took over section 18 about 1874, and the house has been passed down through the family from that time. The original slate roof collapsed about 2015.
