4 Herbert St, Normanville

Normanville

In 1861 Robert Norman sold this house and land to trooper Thomas Berrill. The house had possibly been built in 1857 and rented by blacksmith John Dunstall.

Thomas Berrill arrived in South Australia in April 1848 on the 'Bolton'. He joined the police force in 1851 and was one of the first troopers to be posted to the new police station at Normanville in 1856. He married Bridget McCarthy in 1854 at Trinity Church Adelaide. Initially the couple may have lived at the police station but as their family increased they moved to this house. In 1857 Bridget had given birth to triplets, but none of them survived. In 1858 they had a son, and in 1860 a daughter. The Berrill family left Normanville in 1865 for a new posting. Before they left they were given a complimentary supper with about 40 people present, including the Chairman of the District Council.
