Yankalilla Branch of the National Trust

Yankalilla Library Meeting Room

The Yankalilla Branch of the National Trust was formed after the demolition on Butterworth Beach House, also known as the Yankalilla Bay Homestead, in 2023. In December 2023 their first meeting was held at Fergussons Mill, an important historical link to the story of Comic Court, and at some risk as the land on which it stood had recently been sold. Unlike most other National Trust branches, the Yankalilla group isn’t housed in a site which they look after such as a heritage listed building or a Museum. So their main purpose is as an advocacy group ‘to advocate for the natural and cultural heritage of the district’.

Mayor Darryl Houston and Mark Staniforth of the Willunga Branch of the National Trust have both been very supportive of this new initiative. The group is monitoring places of heritage significance in the region such as Dunstall Cottage and Delamere Uniting Church.

Yankalilla & District Historical Society supports the cultural, spiritual, ecological and economic regeneration of the Aboriginal peoples of this place assisted by the actions and power of individuals, organisations and governments.
